Computer Consulting

We can help with everything from a simple question about a home PC, to helping pick out a computer system, to setting up a complex array of networked servers and workstations. Making decisions about computer systems, software and networks can become confusing unless you are familiar with all of the variables involved. A good business decision is hard to make and can become costly if you do not estimate your business needs accurately. The experts at Houston Computing Services can help you get the information you need to make sound business decisions for your company, or your personal computing needs. We will take you through the steps in assessing the type of system or systems you need, and evaluate the software and operating systems that best fit your needs.

Computer repair, upgrade, tune-up

Running out of hard drive space? Need more memory? Whether your computer needs a little extra speed, needs an upgrade, or just quit working we can help. We keep most common parts in stock, so we can usually have up back up and running in hours. We can often answer upgrade questions, or troubleshoot computer problems right over the phone and give you an estimate immediately. You then have the option of doing the work yourself, bringing the system to us, or we will even come to you*, saving the hassle of unplugging all the wires and cables. Some computers are proprietary or just too old to be upgraded cost-effectively. We can assist you in deciding which parts can be upgraded, or consult on a new computer system upgrade if necessary.

Training: Computer, software, hardware, network

We offer personalized training to meet your individual or business needs. We offer training on a wide variety of software, computer, hardware and networks. Our trainers have real-life knowledge and experience of the components they are training, so our training is highly customized for each target audience, weather it be a single individual, a family, or an entire department.

Programming

We can edit and debug source code in numerous programming and scripting languages, as well as write and design programs. Programming languages include Ada, assembly (x86 and VAX VMS), BASIC, batch files (DOS), C (including ANSI C, C++, Turbo C++, Visual C), COBOL, Fortran, HTML, JavaScript, Pascal, PERL, Visual BASIC, many macro based languages and more.

Hardware: Installation, setup and configuration

We can install, setup and configure most types of computers and computer related hardware. From setting up a new computer system out of the box, to swapping hard drives and peripherals between existing computers in your office, and installing graphic accelerators in workstations or configuring network routers, we can do it all. Sometimes putting an additional hard drive or modem in an office PC sounds like a simple job, but it is common to run into resource conflicts, software incompatibilities, or any number of other problems. Sometimes the hardware just doesn't come with the right cables or drivers for your system. Whatever the case, we can help by installing your hardware for you.

Software: Installation, setup and configuration

We offer complete installation, setup and configuration of most software programs, including custom applications. We can help you choose the right software for your needs, install it, and configure it with the options best for you. Installing software isn't always as easy as it should be. Some installation guides give instructions that are vague and confusing, or even inaccurate. Even if you are an experienced computer user, it is sometimes hard to know exactly what filters, tools and other options to install. You usually do not want to install options you don't need or won't use, as they can use more memory, hard drive space, and other valuable resources, as well as slow down the program and even the whole computer. We will go over everything with you to make sure you get the software installation that meets your individual needs.

Networking - home or office

A network is very useful for sharing files, printers and even internet access. Weather in a home environment or an office environment, we offer complete installation and setup of all hardware and software required to get a network up and running. There are many different types of networks and network configurations. Based on your needs, and what the network will be used for, we will help you decide which type of network, protocols, and services are best for your network. We can also help train you on how to use and maintain the network. If you network is outdated or running slow and unable to handle the growing volume of network traffic or users, we can help you decide what your network needs to run its best.

Computer / system configuration

Maybe you have a new computer, maybe you are adding hardware to a computer, or maybe your computer is just running slow. We can help you get your system running its best by configuring each component to its proper resources and settings, resolving any potential resource conflicts, and making sure the software and drivers are configured to use the system properly.

Memory / system optimization

If your computer system is running slow, then it could be time to consider adding memory and / or optimizing your system. Many of today's software programs require lots of memory, and poorly configured software will slow a system down. We can upgrade your memory and optimize your system by cleaning up your computer configurations. This is particularly true if you noticed your computer slow down after installing a software package. A lot of installation programs for software packages configure your computer to automatically run unnecessary programs when Windows starts. Although it is supposed to make the program faster or easier to use, the auto-start programs usually just slow down the computer, or add extra icons to your system tray. We can clean up the unnecessary programs for you.

Windows - all versions: Installation, configuration, setup, upgrade

Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 95 OPK1, Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Me (Millennium edition), Whistler (latest consumer operating system - still in beta). There are many versions of Windows out there, and they are all at least a little bit different. We can help you determine which version of Windows (or other operating system) is best for your computer / software configuration. We can recommend, install, setup and configure any version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, weather it be a new installation, or an upgrade of a previous operating system or other version of Windows.

Virus detection and virus removal

Viruses can destroy a file, a group of files, your computer system, an entire computer network, or just cause a software program to malfunction. Some viruses are harmless and only cause the user to become frustrated but will not seriously effect the computer system. Other viruses can corrupt memory and hard drives which will cause a computer to run slower, disable a computer so that it no longer boots, or destroy files on a hard drive. Since the use of internet services have made it quick and easy to download, it is possible to accidentally download viruses onto your system. We can provide virus detection and in most cases, disinfect, or eliminate all viruses on your computer. In addition, we can set up home or business computers to auto detect these viruses.

Viruses can be very dangerous, and destructive to your computer. It is always a good idea to back up your computer on a regular basis, scan your computer for viruses often, and most important, be careful where you copy or download files from!

Software and beta testing

We do complete testing and troubleshooting of software. You provide the system (or in some cases we will provide the system) and we will put your programs to the test. We can give complete feedback and evaluation for ease of use, installation, conflicts, and software problems. We will often beta test software packages and operating systems free of charge if it is something we may use or support.

Software development

Have you ever thought, "I wish my computer could ..."? Sometimes just a simple program that performs a single, simple task, can make life so much easier. We can design and write simple tools and utilities, or complex, software packages. To see some utilities and other software that we have written for public domain, please see our downloads page.

Games: Installation, setup, configuration, cheats and "spoilers"

We do complete game setup and installation and setup for a single computer, or groups of computers for multi-player games. Some multiplayer games are designed to run on a network or modem, and getting them up and running can become a chore. Games often require information about your graphics and video, sound cards, hard drives, different types of memory, mice, CPU, cache, CD-ROM drives, joysticks, game controllers, etc. We can help you get your games up and running in the best configurations.

If you have more than one computer, and would like to get them connected, or networked together to play the latest multi-player games, we can do that also. Most new shooting, sports and driving games that come on CD-ROM or DVD can be set up as multi-player games. Some examples of these networked multi-player games are: Unreal, Quake, etc. There are literally thousands or network-ready games too numerous to mention. Imagine going head-to head with your buddies on some of these games! If you get stuck playing a game, we can help you with hints, tips or tricks. We can even give you game cheats and "spoilers" if available.

Internet: Email, www, newsgroups, internet access, FTP

We can do complete installation and setup of all hardware and software required to access the internet, World Wide Web, Email, Newsgroups, FTP, etc. If you need a commercial account, or would like to register your own domain, we can handle all of the details of getting a domain name registered for you as well as helping you launch your own web site. Complete training on mail handling, web site maintenance, and creating web pages are all part of participating on the internet. If you are using Windows 95/98/NT and want to just access the web and use email, a service provider is probably all you will need. A web browser comes with current versions of Windows and configuring the browser to work is probably all that is needed. If you want high-speed internet access, we can help you get set up with not only modems, but help you with ISDN, help you find out if DSL or cable technology is available in your area, or even go with the faster T1 and DS3 internet connections. If your computer is on a network, we can help you get internet access to your network, so all computers (or just the ones you choose) have internet access without the use of a modem or additional equipment or phone lines.

Web page design and HTML

We offer complete web page design for personal or business use. We can do anything from a single simple web page to an entire web site. We can design custom forms, CGI scripts, as well as JavaScript and VBScript programming to get the most out of your web site. We can set up password protected files or folders, set up SSL secure pages for confidential information or transaction processing, help you design and create your own graphics, or do it for you. We can design internet or intranet web sites designed for specific corporate web browsers, or design very user-friendly, browser-friendly web sites that will work with any operating system, on any web browser, on any screen resolution with any color depth.  The choice is yours.

Modem / modem line: Installation, setup and configuration

Internet access or other types of communications such as faxes require the use of a modem on your system. Most new computers sold today come with modems, and modems are still the most common way to access the internet. If your system has no modem or a modem with a speed of less than 33.6 kbps, you might want to consider upgrading your computer. New 56k modems are relatively inexpensive right now but as technology grows, so do the needs of today's modems and other connectivity devices. We can install and configure a new modem (or other connectivity device) into your system, troubleshoot existing modem problems, or upgrade an old modem. We can also install new and additional phone jacks in your home or office, in case you need a place to plug in your modem. If you are having problems connecting your modem to the internet or your service provider, we can help troubleshoot the line, connection and ISP settings including TCP/IP addresses and DNS settings.

CD creation and duplication **

Since most computers now have CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives it is often useful to copy or burn information to a CD-ROM to share among computers. One example of this includes a single CD with several software programs on it to help speed and ease the task of installing standard software on multiple office computers**. Also, some license agreements allow you to make a backup copy of some software in case the original CD media becomes scratched or damaged**. We can also help you create your own CDs that contain data, software, audio, video or any combination. There are several uses for this including archive, backup, training and even entertainment.

Document design and creation

We can help you design and create custom documents in numerous formats. Anything from a simple shopping list in a word processor or text editor, to the more complex resume where layout and format are important. We can also help set up spreadsheets, databases, presentations, brochures, flyers, and even graphics. We can do anything from getting you started to doing everything for you. Especially if you are new to document design, it can be very helpful, and save a lot of time in the long run if you have some help with the layout and underlying design of your database / presentation or graphic layout.

Printing: Laser and/or color

We can help with everything from setting up a new printer or network printer or printing out documents in rich color, or crisp, high quality, high resolution laser. We have high-speed, high quality laser printers that can print black and white or color documents. There are many settings to printer drivers, and sometimes printing out your document does not yield the same quality as you expected. Weather we print it for you, or we help you get the settings right, we will make sure you get the quality you expect.

Graphics: Creation, editing, format conversion

If you have a logo or graphic image that you need created, scanned, edited, updated, or converted to a different format, we can do it all. We can help you update or format your images for print, web pages, or any other application. In many cases companies that print brochures, or publish images require that the images be in specific formats, or be certain resolutions. We have the experience and knowledge to know how to convert images between hundreds of different formats, know how to handle colors and halftones, and convert images from full-color to black and white for screen printing, or help you convert a grayscale image to a full-color image.

Video conversion / editing

Have some video files you need edited? Have a video tape you want converted to computer video? We can cut out unwanted footage, add titles and sound, or even edit and digitally enhance videos and save them to a computer format.  These videos can then be played in a VCD or CD-i player, and even most DVD players. You can have a copy of your childhood videos (or any other important videos) on a CD, where the quality won't deteriorate any further, and in many cases we can make it playable on your home or computer DVD player.
